Baby, it's cold outside
2.26.2010
|

It's a beautiful (but icy!) snow-filled day here in New York City. High time to treat yourself to some hot cocoa, a good book and find yourself a fireplace somewhere to cuddle up in front of. Or, bundle yourself and your little ones up and head out into the world for some winter fun. I've collected some of my favorite winter warmies for inspiration...

Hot Chocolate!!

I know I'm almost too late on this, but if you haven't been over to city bakery this month you have three days until their hot chocolate festival finishes. We've had great fun trying out their different flavours, my favourite was the 'Tropical hot chocolate' (imagine chocolate and fried bananas) but 'Ode to the polar bear' was a close second (imagine a melted bar of white chocolate..mmmm).... If you don't get there in the next few days, the regular hot chocolate is delicious (served in bowls with home-made marshmallows), or why not get inspired and make your own!Labels: eating |

I wish parents still dressed their children the way they used to. It's so sweet and sophisticated, and kids just looked like kids. Can you imagine a child in the forties wearing a Dora the Explorer t-shirt and matching shorts? Now come on... Anyway, even though fashion for children has changed, you can still find some special pieces for those special occasions when you want your child to look like mommy dressed them. Take a peek at all of the vintage pieces at Belle Heir. Labels: children's clothing |

If you're in any way interested in typography or design, then like me, you've probably had the occasional love affair with an ampersand. They are beautiful creatures, although often very difficult to get on their own (usually they are found sandwiched between lesser letters or symbols). Until now, that is: I just came across this great ampersand blog celebrating the beauty of the humble '&' by posting one a day throughout 2010! 316 to go! Labels: typography |

Love letters...

A thing of beauty is a joy for ever: Its lovliness increases; it will never Pass into nothingness; but still will keep A bower quiet for us, and a sleep Full of sweet dreams, and health, and quiet breathing.
- Excerpt from A Thing of Beauty, by John Keats... Happy Valentines Day xxx

New York City is officially in the midst of winter chaos. The snow is not falling as much as it is pelting down around us and filling our world with white. On days like this, I love to visit Stina Persson's beautiful portfolio. She reminds me of all that is warm and summery and magical... sigh...Labels: art |

Fancy a Harney?
2.09.2010

Flavor of the day: Winter White Earl Grey. Delicious.
There's nothing lovelier or more comforting than a nice hot cup of tea on a cold morning. At the moment, we all adore Harney and Sons. Their exotic flavors not only smell and taste incredible, but the packaging is sooo pretty (we'd like to collect every flavor and build a beautiful fortress out of the tins) and even the tea itself is a work of art (visit their blog to see pics).
On a side note, if you're ever in the Millerton area of Connecticut, the Harney and Sons teashop (complete with tasting room and cafe) is just adorable. I've been there a couple of times and always leave with a bag of goodies and a big smile on my face. Labels: eating |

It is so very cold outside today and I am quite jealous of these little fashionable eggs in their warm and adorable felt ensembles. They are available from the lovely Brooklyn store, Abitare. Visit their online shop and keep your eggs happy all winter long... Labels: shopping |

Yesterday we armed ourselves with notebooks, large tote bags and comfortable shoes and hit the New York International Gift Fair at the Javits Convention Centre. There were sooo many amazing, beautiful products and we left feeling very inspired (and exhausted). One particular vendor, the Ross Art Group, had these enormous original vintage posters which we fell in love with. We sooo wanted to take one back to the studio with us but couldn't decide which one we loved best. We got it down to six favorites... any thoughts?

Arthur Elgort does such a wonderful job of capturing moments of these young dancers. The last one is my favorite. She just looks so sweet and innocent and has no idea of what a beautiful young woman she is becoming! Visit his amazing website here.

I was quite taken aback with these beautiful photographs by Gemma Booth. She creates beautiful dream-like worlds that you just want to lose yourself in... worlds where the girls are lovely and mysterious and definitely hiding something. Labels: photography |

The Gumnut babies at the Hat Shop
Since I am the only Aussie in the Petite Alma studio, I often feel a bit self indulgent highlighting design or talent from down under... but not today! Happy Australia Day everybody! To celebrate, I've included illustrations from one of the most loved children's book in Oz: The Tales of Snugglepot and Cuddlepie. These Gumnut babies live in Eucalyptus trees and have all sorts of adventures with their bushland friends while avoiding the evil Banksia men. These original illustrations by May Gibbs are just fantastic.
