perry street

We decided to stay in NYC for Thanksgiving this year and it was wonderful!  The highlight of the weekend was Thanksgiving dinner at Perry Street, one of the Jean George restaurants.  Outstanding meal and ambiance- I highly recommend it!
If you want to try some of the Jean George restaurants at a price that won't break the bank you can try their “autumn promotion”.  The down side is that you have to eat dinner between 5:30 and 6:30, but it’s a great way to eat at some of the city’s best restaurants for much less.  They offer a three course lunch for $26 and three course dinner for $38, which is pretty darn good for NYC.

We all fall down
11.25.2009

Christoph Niemann over at the New York Times has a delightfully whimsical and creative blog called Abstract City. It's full of unexpected illustrations and witty thinking that just makes me smile. I especially love his California and Kansas trees; it would be so fun to see all the United Leaves of America together! You should check out his blog here to see the rest of his column - don't miss the poplar and the unpolplar leaves. And whilst you're over there, take a look at his I Lego NY post.

the wonderful world of rob ryan
11.23.2009

How beautiful are these paper cutouts by the super talented Rob Ryan!!?? I can't decide what I love more: his illustrative style, the imaginative worlds he creates, or the poetic little wonderings he features in them. He's got some pieces currently showing at the amazing Museum of Art and Design, and I'm really looking forward to seeing his work in person. If you can't get there yourself, check out his blog to keep up to date on all things Rob.

a fondness of evenings
11.18.2009

It seems appropriate that since my last entry was dedicated to sunrises, this one should be about sunsets. Yesterday afternoon was absolutely stunning and we were blessed with the above view from our studio window.

I've always been a big fan of that precious time between the afternoon and night, and recently came across a book which perfectly captures the magic that is; evening. 3191: Evening, is a photographic documentation of evenings taken over the course of a year by Maria Alexandra Vettese and Stephanie Congdon Barnes. Their concept is a lovely one, and is made extra special by the calm, ephemeral quality of the images. Below are a few from their site... sigh...

vintage fairy tales
11.16.2009

I saw a postcard for an exhibition at the Church of Sweden in NYC and fell in love with the little monkey on it.  Unfortunately the exhibition is over, but you can still look at the website to see some of the work.  Rebecka, the creator, lives in Sweden and calls herself a mixed message photographer.  Her website has all sorts of clever ideas and photographs.  Some of it is a little quirky, but interesting nonetheless.
You can view the site here.

Richard Serra

Photograph from the Gagosian website

Photograph by David Levene

I'm so excited to go to the Richard Serra exhibition this weekend at the Gagosian Gallery. If you haven't explored his work before (and even if you have), it's definitely worth seeing. His enormous, beautifully coloured and textured, labyrinthine sculptures are as much an experience as a work of art. Standing alone in the centre of a Serra Scultpure makes me feel peaceful and wondrous.

The lovely Virginia.  Not only talented, but beautiful too!
Who ever knew our childhood friends would turn out to be so talented and creative?  Virginia and I grew up together in Texas.  Our mothers became friends years ago in Houston and Virginia and I later attended school together.  I can remember sliding down her staircase on her mattress and crashing into the front door!  What fun we had.  We don't see each other that often, but I'm so proud of the work she has done with her photography and wanted to share it with everyone.

today was a beautiful day
11.09.2009

The late Alan Fletcher is one of my favorite designers/thinkers... he had this incredibly unique, quirky and beautiful way of summing up life. These sunrises (from his book Picturing and Poeting) were created as part of his reflective process – "an attempt to capture that moment when the sun suddenly arrives, like a cork popping out of a bottle."

It just seemed like an appropriate way to end another beautiful, sunny autumn day in New York City...

I think Stephannie Rausser is one of the most talented photographers around.  Especially when it comes to children's photos.  The "love" section of her portfolio is pretty impressive too.  Make sure you have an hour (or more) before going to her site as you are sure to spend that much time flipping though her photos.

Whenever I'm in London, I always make sure I stop at the Liberty Store on Regent Street. It's such an incredibly beautiful shop. The building itself is amazing; It was built in the 1920s from two ships and in the centre is a hall four stories high. I love peering over the balcony from the top floor, especially when there's a huge Christmas tree installed for the holidays! And everything inside is just exquisite, I love looking around the stationary (of course!) and the haberdashery sections (who doesn't love Liberty fabrics?), really I could just spend hours and hours in here.

Once upon a tart
11.02.2009

Happy Halloween! I know I'm a little bit late, but I was far too busy over the weekend stuffing myself with wickedly yummy treats from my new favorite village spot. Once Upon a Tart is the sweetest little bakery/cafe, with (as the name would suggest) particularly delicious tarts. I highly recommend wasting away a Sunday afternoon on their little porch with a coffee, pastry and a good book... followed by a quick shopping spree at Purl (right next door!). I promise you'll live happily ever after...
