the male brain
9.28.2010

A while ago, our friends over at Babyccino featured The Female Brain by Louann Brizendine.  I ordered it immediately, read it quickly and was fascinated to learn why we act the way we do.  The counterpart, The Male Brain, recently came out and I just finished reading it.  It is so helpful for understanding baby boys, little boys, teenage boys, college boys, husbands, fathers, brothers... all of them!  It looks big, but is actually pretty short- about half of the book is the reference section in the back, so don't let the size scare you.  Check it out here.

As a Brit living in the Big Apple I just had to go see Jason Bell's new series of photographs: An Englishman in New York" (at the National Portrait Gallery in London). I loved the little interviews accompanying the photographs describing each expat's New York story.... Read all about it!

And just in case London is a little too far away for you, the series has been turned into a book of the same name.

"watch and see you'll lay an egg like me"

More from Cicci Cocco... The first one is my all time favorite.

"biting babies don't bark"
"what shall we do with our bucket and barrow?
i know let's follow that arrow."
"watering a little flower in the cabbage patch"
Photographs of children always provide us with a good dose of comic relief.   We are crazy about the photos in the book, Cicci Cocco, which capture children's playful and free spirits and make us laugh every time we look at them.  We like the little captions accompanying each photo as well.  We will be posting more photos this week of our favorites!

sweet surrealism

There's something magical about these teeny little thumbnail paintings by Fanny Brennan. They are taken from her lovely little book Skyshades, which is filled with sixty of these mini imagined worlds...

poolside reading
8.08.2010

So, I've been logging in A LOT of hours by the pool reading.  What a treat it has been!  To begin with, I read The Help by Kathryn Stockett, which is an absolutely amazing book.  A best seller and movie rights sold to Dreamworks already.  Way to go Kathryn.
Next, The Shell Seekers by Rosamunde Pilcher, one of my mother's all time favorites.  She gave it to me a few Christmases ago and I'm just now getting around to reading it. It was on the New York Times bestseller list for 30 consecutive weeks back in 1988 and was made into a TV series movie twice.
Last, Little Bee by Chris Cleave, which I haven't begun, but will in the next few days.  It has received rave reviews from Oprah and the rights were bought by Nicole Kidman who will produce and star in the film version.
If you have any favorite summer reads, please let us know!

Summer reading
8.06.2010

Nothing beats lying under the southern Italian sun with a belly full of pizza margherita and a fabulous book. But those missing out on the sun and the pizza can still bask in all that is Italiano with this great read by Dianne Hales (I'm loving the cover artwork also). Beware: it will have you booking a ticket before you know it...

Flower fairies
7.22.2010

We were going through our books in the studio yesterday (we've got quite a lovely collection) and came across A World of Flower Fairies by the incredible Cicely Mary Barker. Suddenly, it was as if we'd all just been transported back to our childhoods- each of us had such fond memories of pouring through the pages and imagining the lives of these darling little creatures. And of course, we all had our favorites... here are some of them.

Maira Kalman Exhibition
4.09.2010

I love Maira Kalman's bold use of colour, her unique wit and the way she manages to capture so much personality in her portraits. This is why next week I'm heading over to the Julie Saul Gallery to check out her latest exhibition: Further Illuminations (it's on until May 1st). If you don't happen to live in nyc, then you should take a trip to your nearest book store or library to take a peek at her most wonderful books: The Principles of Uncertainty, and Elements of Style.

Poor Eli
3.05.2010

Isn't this book so cool? It perfectly captures the 'I love you but you drive me crazy' mentality of dog-owners everywhere. Super talented husband and wife team Eight Hour Day wrote and designed the book based on their own very naughty Eli. I love the unexpected illustrative style, fab typography and color palette.

Alphabeasties and Other Amazing Types
2.16.2010

I came across this children's book the other day and I thought that this was such a great idea for little abecedarians. It was created by By Sharon Werner and Sarah Forss from Werner Design Werks. They have some really beautiful work; I'll definitely be posting some more of their designs soon! You can buy the book here, or check out more images from the book just here.

The Gumnut babies at the Hat Shop

Since I am the only Aussie in the Petite Alma studio, I often feel a bit self indulgent highlighting design or talent from down under... but not today! Happy Australia Day everybody! To celebrate, I've included illustrations from one of the most loved children's book in Oz: The Tales of Snugglepot and Cuddlepie. These Gumnut babies live in Eucalyptus trees and have all sorts of adventures with their bushland friends while avoiding the evil Banksia men. These original illustrations by May Gibbs are just fantastic.

A little silver spoon
1.19.2010

I came across the neatest book over the weekend: The Silver Spoon for Children: Favorite Italian Recipes. The book takes recipes from the original Silver Spoon (Italian food bible) and breaks them down for kids. I just had to buy it... partly because the illustrative style is adorable, and partly because it explains the recipes in a way that even I can understand!

a fondness of evenings
11.18.2009

It seems appropriate that since my last entry was dedicated to sunrises, this one should be about sunsets. Yesterday afternoon was absolutely stunning and we were blessed with the above view from our studio window.

I've always been a big fan of that precious time between the afternoon and night, and recently came across a book which perfectly captures the magic that is; evening. 3191: Evening, is a photographic documentation of evenings taken over the course of a year by Maria Alexandra Vettese and Stephanie Congdon Barnes. Their concept is a lovely one, and is made extra special by the calm, ephemeral quality of the images. Below are a few from their site... sigh...

Milly-Molly-Mandy
10.23.2009

Meet Milly-Molly-Mandy. She's a delightful young girl who lives in “a nice white cottage with a thatched roof” along with Father, Mother, Grandpa, Grandma, Uncle and Aunty. I grew up (as my mother also did) hearing all about her adventures which include climbing trees, keeping house and going on picnics with Little-Friend-Susan.

I've scanned in some pages from my own copies of the books (printed in 1941), however if you're interested in sharing Joyce Lankester Brisley's adorable world with your own little ones, Amazon has 'The Big Milly-Molly-Mandy Storybook' available in a hardcover. Hooray!
