As a Brit living in the Big Apple I just had to go see Jason Bell's new series of photographs: An Englishman in New York" (at the National Portrait Gallery in London). I loved the little interviews accompanying the photographs describing each expat's New York story.... Read all about it!
And just in case London is a little too far away for you, the series has been turned into a book of the same name.Labels: art, books, photography |

Venice Canal, ca 1878 by the American painter John Henry Twachtman, 1853-1902
The Grand Canal, Venice, ca. 1898–99 by American artist Maurice Prendergast
I have been staying in Venice, California on the canals and it is simply delightful! It's making me yearn to visit the canals in Venice, Italy. I was looking up some Venice information and found these lovely paintings. I hope to go there soon... Labels: art |

Flower fairies
7.22.2010
|
We were going through our books in the studio yesterday (we've got quite a lovely collection) and came across A World of Flower Fairies by the incredible Cicely Mary Barker. Suddenly, it was as if we'd all just been transported back to our childhoods- each of us had such fond memories of pouring through the pages and imagining the lives of these darling little creatures. And of course, we all had our favorites... here are some of them.Labels: art, books, illustration |

Andy and nature: Hand in Hand
7.13.2010
|
Andy Goldsworthy is known for waking before the crack of dawn to assemble icicles into beautiful spiralled sculptures that melt as the sun rises. Luckily for us he is a fastidious documenter of his work and he does create some more permanent works of art, such as this rather wonderful weaving wall that you can see at the Storm King Sculpture park (that's a whole other blog post!). If you do fall in love with his work as much as I have, I urge you to watch Rivers and Tides, a fascinating film that documents Andy's creative process and gives you a greater insight into his aesthetic philosophies - something I don't have anywhere near enough space to go into here!Labels: art, photography |

Lucinda Rogers
6.21.2010

I've been a big fan of Lucinda Rogers for some time. I could while away many an hour standing in front of her incredibly intricate large scale illustrations absorbed in the stories they tell about our beautiful cities and the people who live in them. I love the fact that she'll sit in the middle of a busy street quietly capturing the hustle and bustle of the world around her...Labels: art, illustration |

Stuart McLachlan is a pro with scissors! Check out these wonderfully intricate head pieces and props he creates for editorial work (he also creates lovely illustrations and catwalk pieces). What an imagination!
Kat actually blogged about this Fred Bare photo shoot a little while ago and I highly recommend taking a look at the rest of the pics... they take playing 'dress up' to a whole new level. Labels: art |

Lego Candy
6.02.2010
|
A friend introduced me to Lego candy the other day and before we gobbled them all up, I managed to snap this photo so I could share this wonderful treat with you guys. They come in a range of pretty pastel colours, and I love the fact that you can actually build with them! You can buy enough to create a small town on Amazon, but if anyone knows where you can buy them in smaller quantities, please let me know...Labels: art, children's toys, eating |

stunning sevilla
5.17.2010

I was recently lucky enough to visit warm, sunny, beautiful Spain and I fell head over heels for Sevilla (no surprises there). I just love the colour of the city... it's so alive and full of visual surprises and contrasts. These postcards kind of sum it all up for me and I thought I should share the love...Labels: art, travel |

Quirky Ceramics
5.04.2010

I thought I would share with you the wonderful ceramics of Rae Dunn. She is influenced strongly by Wabi Sabi, the Japanese philosophy that embraces the idea of imperfection and the transient nature of beauty, which results in some beautiful, playful pottery. Her little birth plaque is such a sweet simple idea for a newborn baby.Labels: art, shopping |

Florence Broadhurst
4.19.2010
|
In Australia, you can't get five minutes into your design education without falling in love with Florence Broadhurst. She was a fabulously strong and interesting woman and her designs are still in high demand, adorning the walls, carpets and furniture of stylish homes all over the world. I love her bold colour palette and would DIE for a wall covered in the yellow bamboo print...Labels: art, interior decorating |
