Little girl, big city
8.31.2010

We're doing a big office clean up at the moment and came across this image that Kirby tore out of a magazine ages ago (she thinks it was Bambino). We all immediately fell in love with this little girl... it looks like she's just out and about for the day in Soho, running some errands, squeezing in a little shopping, maybe meeting up with friends later on... adorable.

In my dreams...
8.24.2010

It's a rainy old day here in the big apple... the kind of day that leaves you staring out the window dreaming of sunshine and pretty umbrella-topped drinks. After returning from Italy however, my new go-to fantasy is this hotel: Il San Pietro. It's located on the edge of a cliff between Praiano and Positano and it is simply divine.

Back to work
8.23.2010

We're all finally back in New York after our summer vacations and are very excited to be bringing our travel inspiration into the studio, so stay tuned for all sorts of fresh Petite Alma designs coming your way!

Of course, a return to the studio calls for new stationery, and our go-to store is Muji. They are right around the corner and their products are beautifully simple and so usable. They also have fab travel products (for next time we all decide to hop overseas).

Rio de Janeiro!
8.20.2010

I just returned from a completely amazing trip to Brazil to see my sister and her boyfriend who have recently moved to Rio. Far from being the relaxing beach holiday I imagined it would be; we spent a very happy two weeks climbing up mountains, seeing new and exciting animals (I loved the botanical gardens), riding up the most rickety tram to Saint Theresa (a beautiful part of town), dancing til the wee hours in Lapa and watching the sun set from the superb Ipanema beaches!

oxo tots
8.19.2010

Sippy cup set
Training cup side view

Training cup view from above
Snack disk
Small and large bowl set
Flip top snack cup

We came across Oxo tots at the gift show this week and are crazy about their products.  Our favorite was the Sippy cup set.  In the beginning, the baby uses the Sippy Cup with Handles.  When they have mastered the handles, you can just pop those off and still have the grippy sides to hold on to. When they are ready to use a regular cup, just take the sippy cup top off and replace it with the training cup which has small perforations around the edge to control the flow of liquid.  If they over-tilt the cup or tip the cup over, they don't loose as much of the liquid, minimizing messes during the learning process.  For the last stage you can just pop out the training lid and have a regular cup.  Brilliant!

Eat with your eyes
8.16.2010

A fabulous Torta ricotta e pera (ricotta and pear cheesecake) this evening inspired me to try and track down a recipe to share with you all. However, I stumbled across something even greater: Tastespotting: a collection of delicious images which each link to a recipe. So simple. So scrumptious. And check out all these other amazing ricotta creations! If all goes well, the Petite Alma team shall be well fed when we all get back to work this week!

canals of venice
8.14.2010

Venice Canal, ca 1878 by the American painter John Henry Twachtman, 1853-1902

The Grand Canal, Venice, ca. 1898–99 by American artist Maurice Prendergast

I have been staying in Venice, California on the canals and it is simply delightful! It's making me yearn to visit the canals in Venice, Italy. I was looking up some Venice information and found these lovely paintings. I hope to go there soon...

summer fashion
8.13.2010

I've been so inspired by beach-side fashion on my travels this summer: everybody is being so bold with colours and cuts. Belgium kids brand Maan has really hit the nail on the head with this funky summer line for littlies...

sweet surrealism

There's something magical about these teeny little thumbnail paintings by Fanny Brennan. They are taken from her lovely little book Skyshades, which is filled with sixty of these mini imagined worlds...

poolside reading
8.08.2010

So, I've been logging in A LOT of hours by the pool reading.  What a treat it has been!  To begin with, I read The Help by Kathryn Stockett, which is an absolutely amazing book.  A best seller and movie rights sold to Dreamworks already.  Way to go Kathryn.
Next, The Shell Seekers by Rosamunde Pilcher, one of my mother's all time favorites.  She gave it to me a few Christmases ago and I'm just now getting around to reading it. It was on the New York Times bestseller list for 30 consecutive weeks back in 1988 and was made into a TV series movie twice.
Last, Little Bee by Chris Cleave, which I haven't begun, but will in the next few days.  It has received rave reviews from Oprah and the rights were bought by Nicole Kidman who will produce and star in the film version.
If you have any favorite summer reads, please let us know!

La grande orange
8.07.2010

Next week I will be in LA and can't wait to visit one of my favorite little spots- La Grand Orange.  Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, they serve everything - strong coffee, fresh squeezed juice, eggs, tacos, sushi, hamburgers, salads, wine, delicious desserts... you name it, they have it. And, all of it tastes so fresh and healthy.  I think I'll ride my bike there a few times next week!

Summer reading
8.06.2010

Nothing beats lying under the southern Italian sun with a belly full of pizza margherita and a fabulous book. But those missing out on the sun and the pizza can still bask in all that is Italiano with this great read by Dianne Hales (I'm loving the cover artwork also). Beware: it will have you booking a ticket before you know it...

Benvenuti a Praiano
8.04.2010

It's no wonder emperors used to vacation here. Praiano (the lesser known but far more peaceful and family-friendly town, five minutes south of Positano) is paradise. I don't quite know where to start... the people are just lovely, the water is perfection, the food is glorious, and the view.... bellissima! When you visit (which you must), be sure to eat here and here (you'll thank me). Okay, la spiaggia is calling me! Baci!

Globe trotters
8.02.2010

It's vacation time! We have all escaped the city for 2 weeks and swapped concrete and skyscrapers for some exotic and inspiring beach locations. Kirby is in California, Kat is in Rio and I am on Italy's Amalfi Coast, so get ready to start hearing all about about our individual adventures!

Before I start going on and on about the pasta in Positano however, I wanted to share these crazy beautiful photographs and send you on your own little African getaway. Nick Brandt is just incredible... check out more of his amazing work online here, or do as I did and buy one of his books to drool over in person (they make great gifts also). Ciao!
